ODP Tryouts Start in September

The Olympic Development Program tryouts will be in early September. This is the program that identifies the best players in the state and prepares them for regional and national tryouts. The dates of tryouts and online registration process is posted on our web site in the ODP section.

Players born in 1999 through 1994 are eligible. Players tryout in calendar year based age groups, i.e. January to December. Tryout fee is $30. Players who register after the deadlines will be charged a late fee of $50 for a total of $80.

Deadline for Boys Preliminary:
McCurry South - Deadline for registration is Sept. 3rd
RYSA Complex - Deadline for registration is Sept. 7th
South Forsyth - Deadline for registration is Sept. 7^th

Deadline for Boys State:

Pinckneyville - Deadline for registration is Sept. 22nd

Deadline for Girls Preliminary - Deadline for registration is Sept. 8^th

Summary of Pre-Season Tournaments

What a great start to our Fall 2010 Season and it is hard to believe that almost a month has already passed us by.

Our main objective for Pre-Season Tournaments is to be able to "watch the players play" and further evaluate their current level of ability. There were several very competitive games which brought out the best in our players and made for many thrilling moments to enjoy. WELL DONE to all of the players, coaches and parents during the Tournaments!

CONGRATULATIONS to our U12 Boys AC Milan, NASA Classic U12 Division 1 Champions. After losing their first game they rallied to win three very tough games including a magnificent 2-1 victory in the final. Napoli and Parma also represented quite well and should be proud of their performances against some very stiff competition. Overall our first set of games for the 2010 Fall Season were a great success and we hope that everyone is eager to keep it up and to "get after it" all throughout the season.

A SPECIAL THANKS to Dan Pruehs who continues to pour his heart and soul into his role as our Team Manager. Thanks for getting the boys "dressed", keeping the parents informed and pointing the coaches in the right direction. Thanks also to the Parents who volunteered to assist Dan through the many tasks of of the Tournament weekend.

Our "Regular Season Games" begin on September 11 and during the next two weeks the coaches will be discussing the formation of rosters which will be posted no later than the week of September 6. Rosters will remain "basically the same" for the season but we will consistently have the opportunity to move players between teams based on the development of the individual player, the competition and the number of games per game-date and the particular needs for each team/game.

Congratulations to our boys for a great showing at the NASA Classic this weekend. A great demonstration of team work, determination and perserverance; good effort all around for team Parma and Napoli. Extra kudos to AC Milan for winning the championship.

Spring Break Soccer Camp

April 5-6-7 at GSA

U5-U6 and U8

9am -11am

The players will learn the fundamentals of the game. Play Fun games, competitions and challenging skill building activities.

Cost $45

U9 thru U14

9am – Noon

The camp will focus on the following:

Dribbling: Focus on ways to maintain possession of the ball as well as learn different moves used by professionals to create space and evade defenders.

Heading: Learn the different methods to head the ball, specific to different game situations, while stressing the skills needed to improve directional heading.

Passing & Control: Improve both long- and short-range passing accuracy, and learn to play away from pressure with your first touch--giving you more time to make decisions.

Shooting: Work on striking the ball cleanly and accurately, so that you put a higher percentage of shots in the back of the net.

Agility: Improve footwork while increasing your balance and speed, thereby giving you that extra step to pass your opponent

Small-Sided Games: 3v3 and 4v4!

Cost $60 for three days or $25 per day.

Important Spring Season Information

Last week a meeting was held with Coaches and Managers in preparation for the upcoming season.

· There will be a Parent meeting coming up to inform parents of the Coaches' goals and expectations for the season.

· NO CLEAT RULE- Due to the condition of our complex, we have to do what we can to salvage our fields. Therefore, NO CLEATS are allowed during practice session. All players are encouraged to have a proper pair of TURF shoes which are ideal for training purposes. Flats and tennis shoes will hinder a player's ability to perform at their best.

· Training Kit- Please have your player wear the proper Training Kit for practice. For our teams, this is the grey training shirt (either the Camp Shirt or Newmark shirt from Sean) black shorts and white socks on Tuesdays and free choice of jerseys, black shorts, and white socks on Thursdays.

· State of the Field- It looks like it may be another challenging season for us when it comes to using our complex for training. Please be patient and understanding of this situation.

· Team Website- We are making every effort to use our Team Website as much as possible.

We will begin to post the Player Evaluations on-line this week. We want to provide a brief explanation about the "4 Point Rating Scale" so that everyone understands how we grade the players.

The Scale should be read as follows:

1 - 1.8 is a 4th/D team player 1.8 - 2.5 is a 3rd/C team player 2.5 - 3.3 is a 2nd/B team player 3.3 - 4.0 is a 1st/A team player

If you have any questions feel free to contact us prior to your schedule Player/Parent Meeting or simply talk to us at that time.

Thanks for your patience as we complete the process of providing Player Evaluations for all of the boys in the Academy and Select Programs.

PLAYER EVALUATIONS

To inform the new players and to remind the returning players, the GSA Player Evaluation process consists of an on-line Player Evaluation completed by the Coach as well as a meeting between the Coach and the Player & Parent(s).

The on-line Player Evaluation provides a comprehensive review of the player's Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological development.

All of the Player Evaluations will be completed in January. Thank you for your patience through this process. Each coach has multiple teams and it takes a great deal of time and effort to complete all of the Player Evaluations.

GSA WINTER TRAINING PROGRAM

Coach Mike will conduct a Winter Training Program for any Boys Academy Player interested in improving their Technique in Passing, Receiving, Heading, Shooting as well as 1v1 Attacking & Defending Skills.

Training Sessions will take place from 5:30-6:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays during the month of January from 1/4/10 - 1/27/10. Sessions will be at GSA (or, if available, at an indoor facility near GSA).

Cost is $60 per player for 8 Sessions (2 days per week). Or, $30 per player for 4 Sessions (1 day per week).

Practice Plan Announcement

GSA Academy Parents and Players,

The condition of our soccer fields are very poor. Despite the nicer weather of the past week, all you need to do is walk the complex and you will understand how wet and muddy they still remain. The club was partially open this past week and we really tore-up the fields. As well, as it seems to be the norm nowadays, more rain is due this week. Therefore, we just want to confirm what you already know since we have been "adjusting" practices for the last several weeks.

Practice Plan:

1) If Club is Open we are ready to go at the usual day and time. Website is updated at the lastest by 3pm each day (most of the time).

2) If Club is Closed but the Weather is Good we are ready to conduct the Parking Lot Training Session at the usual day and time. The staff loves these sessions because we really get to focus 90minutes on the most important area of player development - Technique and Skill!!!

3) If Club is Closed and the Weather is Bad we will work to find an indoor facility as we have done in the past and do our best to keep the extra cost to a minimum. The practice time will depend on the practice site that we use and we will do our best to keep it as close to the regularly scheduled practice times as possible.

Updates will be on the team websites as well as sent through email so please stay tuned in.

Indoor Soccer Notice

To All Academy Parents and Players,

As the leaves begin to change color we know that it is time for "Indoor Soccer" to begin. We want to take a minute to explain our policy about Indoor Soccer Leagues.

1) We encourage players to sign up and play Indoor Soccer but it is not a GSA function. It is not mandatory nor is it run by GSA. This time of the year is "break-time" for our coaches and players to take some time apart. If a GSA coach is coaching indoor soccer then it is probably because their son is on the team.

2) It is up to you (the Parent) to be proactive and to get your son on an indoor soccer team if he really wants to play. Best way to do this is to send an email to your fellow teammates and find out who is interested in putting a team together.

3) No one is allowed to use the GSA name or Uniforms for Indoor Soccer Teams.

GSA Spirit Wear

The GSA Phoenix Red 95 Boys (U15 Boys) will be doing a spirit wear fundraiser to raise funds to go with Nuno to Portugal Spring Break of 2011. They will have white GSA tee shirts available for $12, gray long sleeve tee shirts for $18 and Dry Tech Red and Black polo shirts for $35. There will be a slight upcharge for XXL sizes. There will be both adult and youth sizes in the tee shirts and just adult in the polo shirts. You will see a table set up at GSA most Saturdays and probably a couple of training nights.

Please help these boys achieve their goal of going to Portugal while showing the GSA spirit.

Things Your Kids Want You to Know!

Let the players play the game. Soccer is a player’s game and we are being trained to make decisions on the field. Don’t yell out coaching instructions during games and practices. I am trying to concentrate on what the coach says and working on what I’ve been practicing and sometimes you confuse me by your comments. Be supportive and encouraging with your words in order to bring out the best in me.

Don’t yell at me in public. It will just make things worse because I’ll be upset, embarrassed and worried that you’re going to yell at me the next time I make a mistake.

Be a Role Model in how you respect and treat the Referee (who is probably just about my age and maybe even a friend of mine). Don’t scream at or put down the officials, this embarrasses me especially when you are wrong.

Talk positively about my teammates in the same way that you would want other parents to talk about me. Don’t put down my teammates because it takes away from our team spirit and it goes against what the coach is teaching us about Team Work!

Practice good sportsmanship. As a kid, I learn by example. Win gracefully, not boastfully. Lose gracefully, not sourly. Don’t put down the other team. When you do this you’re not giving us a good example of sportsmanship so we get mixed message about being a good sport.

Don’t lose your cool. I love to see you excited about the game, but there’s no reason to get so upset that you lose your temper! It’s our game and all the attention is supposed to be on us and there is no place for derogatory, snide or sarcastic comments at kid’s games.

Avoid the PGA, the Post-Game Analysis. I do not need a lecture about what I did right and wrong. The absolutely worst time for constructive criticism is the ride home in the car after the game. Let’s chill out, savor the feeling of having played and relax, we can talk later.

Laugh and have fun. Sometimes it’s hard for me to relax and have fun during the game when I look over and see you so tense, worried or upset. Sports are about having fun and since I take my behavioral cues from you, at least try to look like you’re having fun.
