Proud parents of great players offer insight

"The worst thing for a kid is to be on the field and hear his father screaming from the sidelines, and the kid has to look over and see that."

That’s from Pablo Forlan, the father of 2010 World Cup Golden Ball (MVP) winner Diego Forlan, one of 55 soccer superstars featured in Bruno Pisano’s book, “My Son The Soccer Player: The Secrets of the World’s Greatest Players as Told by Their Parents.”

Pisano tracked down the parents of great players from around the world for insight on the early years of Messi, Donovan, Drogba and many more. If the parents weren’t available, he interviewed the players. (And despite the “sons” title, included are Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy.)

“I never felt any pressure from my father -- only his company,” says Enzo Francescoli, the predecessor as Uruguay’s greatest player to Forlan, whose father added, “With Diego, I’d motivate him, but I very much believed in not talking unless he talked to me. If he wanted to know about his mistakes I’d tell him, and I’d also tell him about his best moves.”

Mia Hamm’s father, Bill Hamm, speaks of the time she, between 10 and 11, quit the game for a while:

“She got tired of playing soccer for some reason. Therefore she took a break for one of the seasons. She sat back for about six months. I used to continue coaching the team without her. In the next season, she returned with new enthusiasm. She had recharged her batteries and wanted to play soccer again.”

Landon Donovan’s mom Donna Kenney-Cash reveals there were times when he thought of quitting: “Sometimes, he used to think that it is not the game it used to be, that what started out as fun has become something stressful.” It happened when he was away from home at a young age. “But he never stayed negative for long. … Those were just small moments, and he always went back to his love of soccer and went on to fulfill his dreams.”

Albert Drogba urged his son, Didier, to focus less on soccer and strive to become a doctor or lawyer. Diego Maradona Sr. threatened to take his son’s ball away if he didn’t study more. Young Diego responded by spending more time with his teachers.

“But instead of learning, he began to play soccer with his teachers,” recalls Diego Sr. “The issue is that one of his teachers was his accomplice – they’d play soccer together and the teacher would forge good report cards for him.”

Other players besides Lionel Messi coped with being outsized. Francisco Richo, the father of high-scoring Swedish striker Henrik Larsson, lamented that his boy suffered from a poor physique as he “never drank milk or ate fish.”

“When [Henrik] was 12 or 13, because he was very small and skinny, the other players made fun of him,” Richo says. “His coach saw his quality and told him not to worry because he had the skills to make it, even though at the time he had to play with younger children because of his size.”

Larsson grew to 5-foot-10, but Andres Iniesta, scorer of the 2010 World Cup-winning goal for Spain, peaked at 5-7.

Jose Antonio Iniesta recalls his son’s early challenges: “At that time I was thinking that he will grow with time -- his body will grow. But at that age, teams look for players who are bigger. Most of them focused on height. Fortunately Andres was gifted both with technical ability and a great intellect. However, as I said, coaches at the time were skeptical.”

The book also includes detailed biographical features. Its interviews all end with queries for parental advice.

Says Johan Cruyff, “I think my advice for a father or a mother is not to rush their child. … If your kid knows that you are standing behind him through every moment, through thick and thin, then he will surely give his best.”

Nene Cubillas: “Give him the ball and let him enjoy it. Of course you can go to games and applaud him and encourage him, but try never to upset him or push him. Give him all the freedom in the world so that kids can be themselves and do the best they can.”

The Salvadoran playmaker, Mauricio Cienfuegos, settled in the USA after ending his career with the Los Angeles Galaxy as one of the top players in MLS history.

“For me, my son loves American football, so we support him in that because he enjoys it,” says Cienfuegos. “If your son likes soccer, art, another sport – support him in what he does. The most important thing is for your children to be happy and to do what they love.”

The particular area of thinking at which soccer players excel is executive function -- a term that includes creative problem solving, multi-tasking, inhibition and working memory. That last one, working memory, refers to the ability to recall previously stored information on the spot and use it to problem solve. Many of these are skills that can be seen on the field: employing strategy in the midst of a game (creativity, working memory), executing a play while also surveying the field (multi-tasking) and following the rules of the game (inhibition)."

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Dec. 9, 2011) – A cool and overcast day welcomed the Under-15, Under-16 Under-17 and Under-18 US Youth Soccer National League Boys to day two of games at Sports Blast and Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex in Birmingham, Ala.

The U-15 and U-16 teams from GSA Phoenix of Georgia earned their place in the league this season, joining one boys’ team and one girls’ team from the club to previously earn a spot in the league.

“We’ve had a chance to be here in the past and it’s really second to none. What I love about National League is that you have to earn your way to get here, it’s not something that’s given, so I think this is the league you look forward to being in because now you know you’re going to be playing the top teams throughout the country, and there’s nothing an elite athlete looks for more than that. That’s the real thing about this,” said GSA Boys Director of Coaching Nuno Piteira.

“I think if you’re a real athlete you measure yourself against the best, and we know what we are in Region III in terms of competition and how we play, so to have that feel for what happens in the Northeast, the West Coast, the Midwest, it’s a great thing because it gives players that great insight and that great confidence for where they are not only regionally, but more importantly where they are nationally.”

“It gives you the chance to compete against the best but not only that, if you’re a college coach, what you want is to be in a position to evaluate, look at players and measure them against the very best. So we've put ourselves in a position to really showcase our athletes. There are college coaches here out of the Northeast, Midwest and so-forth that don’t have the chance to see kids out of our region every day and they have a chance now to watch the best of the best and say ‘There’s someone that might make a difference in our program’.”

Under-16 GSA Phoenix 96 Red gave up a last minute goal to Region III rival West Pines United Black (FL) yesterday to draw 1-1. Today they finished off the game to come out 1-0 victors and claim a tie for the second spot in the division.

“Ultimately, when you’re in this type of event you’ve got to get points. We played a great Beachside team out of Connecticut today; very competitive, very athletic and they really pressured us and didn’t allow us to do what we like to do. So, to come out of here with three points is massive. Now we look forward to tomorrow because now we know we kind of have an opportunity to be in the mix and look for that thing that all these teams are looking for, which is a bid into the National Championships.”

National League teams are club soccer teams with an individual proven track record of success in US Youth Soccer regional and national competitions, and are among the nation's best. Close to 300 collegiate, professional and National Team coaches are expected to attend this weekend to scout some of the top teams and players in the country, citing the competitive level of each game as every team has to earn their spot in the competition, regardless of hometown or club affiliation.

The first place team from each division (blue and red) in the U-15, 16 and 17 age groups will earn a ticket to the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Championships, making each match valuable to the team’s fate as it could make or break their chance at competing for a National Championship.

Some highlights from today’s matches…

Under-17
The second day of U-17 Boys play featured two teams from last summer’s National Championships as Albion SC White (CA-S), National League division winner and National Championships runner-up in each of the last two seasons, met Region I Champion Beadling SC 94/95 (PA-W). 2010-2011 National League division scoring leader and ’11 National Championships Golden Ball winner Ariel Lassiter stepped up again as he finished off a low cross with a one-time shot in stoppage time to give Albion the 1-0 win.

Galaxy 94/95 Blue (IL) took an early lead over AC Bethesda (MD) with Jack Patrick’s 2^nd minute goal. But last year’s division runner-up, Bethesda, finally grabbed an equalizer in the 83^rd from Region I ODP member Christopher OdoiAtsem to save a point with a 1-1 draw.

Under-16
Region III finalist GSA 96 Phoenix Red (GA) defeated Connecticut state champ Beachside SC 1-0 to move into the top three of the Under-16 Red. Georgia ODP player Joseph Sandres scored the game winner for GSA in the 18^th minute as they improve to 1-0-1.

West Pines United Black (FL) joined GSA and division leader Michigan Jaguars atop the group after their 2-1 come from behind victory over AHFC 96 (TX-S). Geraldo Arriaga scored first for AHFC in the 12^th minute, but Jamar Campion Hinds equalized in the 32^nd before Jon Ross Walker put in the game winner for West Pines with nine minutes to play.

Region II semifinalist CUP Crew Jrs. Gold 95 (OH-S) and, National League returnee and Eastern Pennsylvania state champ Lehigh Valley United 95 (E-PA) could not be separated as they ended 0-0. CUP now has two draws while Lehigh drops to the bottom of the table with a tie and a loss.

Under-15
Region I champion Smithtown Arsenal (NY-E) jumped into the win column with a 2-1 comeback victory versus Region III semifinalist, Concorde Fire Elite (GA). Ryan Ebert notched the first goal for SLSG in the 23^rd and Youth National Team member Logan Panchot doubled the lead in the 31^st. LVU’s Cade Harmon cut the lead in half with a goal just after the restart, but Jessie Messerly extended the lead back to two in the 65^th to close out the win for SLSG.

Maryland state champion MSC Magic Green settled for two draws in its first two games, drawing 0-0 with GSA Phoenix 97 Red (GA). GSA gained their first point in the tie.

November 13, 2011 - 3:00 P.M. On Schrader

Please come out to support the GSA 98 Phoenix Red U14 boys as they play AFC. The game will more than likely be the deciding game for the Classic One Fall Championship. AFC and GSA currently are the top two teams in Classic I. Both teams are very athletic and skilled. The game will be played at 3PM and played on Schrader. This Sunday will also be a great opportunity to support our GSA girls ECNL teams who are playing there last home games of the season against CESA. The schedule is listed below.

It is a great chance for our younger players to see some very competitive soccer. It also is a great time for all of our older teams to come and support our U14 boys with their presence and let everyone on Schrader field know that GSA is a great group of parents, players and coaches who support one another. It is also OK to CHEER as loud as you like for the boys. I hope that our girls finishing up their ECNL games will be able to stay and support the boys as well. Both Campbell and Nuno have created such a great culture of support at our club and this Sunday would be a great day to show it. I hope to see each of you there.

Directions from GSA reflect a 2-and-a-half-hour drive. Coach has asked players to arrive at least an hour before game-time, i.e. 2:00 pm, in order to allow for ample stretching of legs before warm up session begins. Game kit: all white; bring all pieces.

Our hosts graciously sent this information regarding field location and parking:

We are scheduled to play on field #11 which is located on the lower part of the complex. Park at the bottom of the parking lot and go through the gates to the sidewalk. Field 11 is the only field on the right side of that sidewalk. The only restrooms are located on the top part of the complex- a bit of a hike. Drive safely.

CESA Rules and Format

St Francis Sports Medicine Soccer Classic - RULES AND FORMAT

A. All games shall be played in accordance with the FIFA laws, except as specifically superseded by these rules.

TABLE “A”

Point System to Determine Group Winners

Win: Winning teams get 3 points.

Tie: Tying teams get 1 point each.

Loss: Losing teams get 0 points.

No Over time...Tie-Breaking Procedure

Note that the order of the tie breaking rules is important. If the first rule can determine a winner, then the process is over. If the first fails, then the second is used and so on until a winner is determined. These procedures are only used when Table “A” fails to determine a winner. In the event of a 3-way tie, the team that has amassed the greater goal difference will advance. If one team is eliminated due to inferior GD, the process for advancement will start again with head-to-head tiebreaker.

Resolving Ties Using Overtime Play

This procedure is used only for Final matches:

If the match ends in a tie, the teams will be given a five-minute rest and then two full ten-minute overtime periods will be played (i.e. no sudden death). This applies to all age groups.

1. Captains will meet for a coin toss to determine choice of kick-off or goal to defend.

2. After the first ten minute overtime period, teams will switch ends of the field and kick-off after a

Two-minute break. Substitutions may be made.

3. If the game is still tied after two overtime periods are completed, the FIFA kicks from the Penalty Mark procedure will be used to determine a winner.

C. Conduct:

Players sent off and/or coaches removed from a game are automatically suspended from their team’s next tournament game. Players sent off or coaches removed for fighting will not be allowed to return to the tournament. Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their spectators. Coaches cannot be carded, but they can be asked to leave.

D. Spectator and Coaching Areas:

Where possible, teams are to take the same side of the field, with all parents on the opposite side. Coaching areas extend 10 yards each side of the half way line.

E. Forfeits:

Unless superseded by a ruling from the Tournament Director, or her appointed representative, there will be no grace period. Forfeit time is game time. A team must have seven or more players present in order to begin or end a match.

F. Tournament Inclement Weather Policy:

Every attempt will be made to have all matches played. Re-scheduled games may be played under lights in the evening or may be scheduled early Sunday morning, prior to normal starting time at the discretion of the Tournament Director.

Games will continue during rainstorms.

Games will be suspended by the referee or Tournament Director in the event of:

1. Lightning (as determined by the referee or Tournament Director)

2. Hail Storms (as determined by the referee or Tournament Director)

3. Un-playable field conditions (Determined by the referee or Tournament Director)

Tournament Director decisions are final and not subject to appeal. Re-scheduling attempts will be made as quickly and fairly as possible, considering referee and field availability and the normal progress of the competition. As a final solution, it may be necessary to employ a coin toss to determine teams advancing to semi-final and/or finals matches.

The safety of players, referees and spectators is the tournament’s primary concern followed by fairness to the affected teams and the orderly flow of competition to Divisional championships.

G. Games Suspended in the First Half:

Attempt to complete one-half of the match prior to the next scheduled game.

a. If one-half of the match is completed, the game is official and the score stands.

b. If one-half cannot be completed prior to the next scheduled game then the . . .

i. Game may be re-scheduled at the end of the day.

ii. Game may be re-scheduled before start of normal play on Sunday.

iii. Game may be canceled and FIFA kicks will be used to determine a winner. A win will be recorded as a 3-0 win and loss as a 0-3 loss.

Matches called at Half time or during the second half will be considered as complete and final. The score at that time will stand. If the game is a semifinal or final game and ends in a tie, then use table “B” to determine a winner. If the match is a group game and ends in a tie, the score stands and is final. Follow necessary procedures to determine a group ranking as specified.

Matches That Cannot Start At the Scheduled Time:

1. Teams are to remain at the site to begin the match at any point possible prior to 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the next match.

2. Attempt to play two equal halves, changing ends at mid-point with no break at the half.

3. All matches must terminate at the time designated as the starting time of the next match.

4. If the shortened match time available is less than half of the regularly scheduled time, then the match shall be immediately determined by FIFA kicks from the Penalty Mark.

NOTE!!! In any event, teams must report to the scheduled game site prior to the scheduled starting time, ready to play and may not leave the site until the match is canceled by a Tournament Director. Rescheduled match information will be available at the Tournament Headquarters. Teams involved in a canceled match must have a representative check-in with the Tournament Director at the headquarters hotel for re-scheduling information.

H. Player Equipment:

In general, Law IV of FIFA laws apply.

1. When the color of jerseys is similar or identical, the designated home team will change colors (i.e. the team listed first on the schedule when reading from L to R, is the home team). The referee shall be the final authority regarding the need to change. Note, the referee may caution players for not having their socks pulled up and shirts tucked in per FIFA directive.

2. Shin guards are required for all players.

3. Casts: Players who are wearing protective casts are allowed to play if the following conditions are met:

a. The cast is wrapped in foam or other protective material that will protect other players.

b. The player with the cast does not attempt to use the cast to an advantage or in such a way as to put other players in danger as determined by the referee.

c. The referee approved the cast protection and such approval will not be unreasonably withheld.

I. General:

1. All judgment decisions of the referee are final and binding.

2. The Tournament Committee, and all sponsors and organizers, will not be responsible for any expenses incurred by any team or club if the tournament is cancelled in whole or part, nor will any refunds be made.

3. The Tournament Committee reserves the right to decide on all matters pertaining to the tournament and its judgment is final.

4. Official state USYSA rosters, approved guest player rosters (if applicable), laminated USYSA player identification/registration cards, and permits to travel must be presented at tournament registration. Rosters must be originals or state USYSA approved copies with an original official state USYSA stamp or embossed certification on the roster. Three (3) GUEST PLAYERS ARE PERMITTED. All players must be registered to the team.

5. Awards for the top two teams (i.e. 1st & 2nd) shall be awarded immediately following the championship game.

J. Protest:

No protests are allowed.

K. Equal Rest:

Every effort to provide scheduling that provides equal rest for each team will be a primary consideration; however, the limited fields and weather conditions may prevent this from happening. In any event, the objective is to complete the tournament in the time allowed. All divisions are flighted based on the information given about your team in the application and upon Division directors’ knowledge of your team. The goal is to balance the competition as much as possible.

Bellows of Madness - Revisited

I circulated the article below last December following the GSA Adidas Invitational. I am re-circulating it because it is just as relevant today as it was almost a year ago. To readers, old and new, please heed its call. Thanks.

The much-anticipated match-up between our youngsters and the boys from Ohio was finally underway. After the first whistle, more than the static energy emitting from our blankets charged the air, as we watched from the sidelines on that freezing 27-degree morning. It was day two of the GSA Adidas Invitational and our boys had shed the lackadaisical approach they displayed in the match on the previous day, which ended in a poor result.

This morning, they exhibited energy and focus that reminded me of the cliché: “When the road gets tough, the tough get going,” as our boys rose to the occasion of playing the No.1 U12 boys’ team from Ohio.

I tucked the blanket tightly around my body, silently praying that my husband would feed off the almost tranquil atmosphere that had settled onto the pitch within minutes of kick-off. Tranquil, because the self-assurance displayed by the Ohio boys was mesmerizing, their playing style was one of validating each other, as one player talked to the other in the orchestration of their creative strategy. They owned their game and demonstrated self-possession that was admirable for 11 and 12 year olds.

“Wow,” I said to myself and glanced at the mom sitting next to me. She nodded, “these boys are talking to each other,” she said, “I am impressed,” she added. This was a pleasant, new experience for us. A learning opportunity, even as our talented youngsters silently worked hard at playing the game they love.

“I LOVE it,” I intoned, casting a worried glance towards my husband and the handful of dads edging a little too close to the pitch. They were the usual suspects, known to think aloud at soccer games, despite numerous admonishments.

Low-key, occasional directives emitted from the Ohio coach to his boys. And a few commands issued from the formidable force of four coaches assigned to our boys that morning - the official team coach, the two dads (former coaches from different clubs), and a third dad (I am still not sure what purpose he served), all crowded our youngsters’ bench area.

It was fifteen minutes into the first half when the Ohio boys scored. And the loose constraint exhibited by the wayward dads began to unravel. They let their emotions rise to the occasion, fearing that a thrashing was eminent - witness the Ohio boys’ blistering previous match wins of 9-0 and 6-1. The dads took it upon themselves to ‘help the boys out’ and tell them what to do, i.e. coach from the sidelines.

“D-UP! D-UP!” (translation: defend, defend!)

“You are useless there, move up!” (Even though the coach had told the kid to stay in that position).

“What are you doing?"

“You don’t need a wall there?”

“Is that ten feet? Ask for ten feet before you take the free kick!”

“Move the ball up field!”

“C’mon, no more than two touches! One touch football, c’mon!”

“Pass! PASS THE BALL. Pass it!”

The sidelines were perfect pandemonium by now, with horrific testosterone-filled bellows engulfing the pitch. I had heard enough. I got out of my seat and approached the dads.

“Can you hear the way the Ohio boys are talking to each other?” I asked, feeling like a Kindergarten teacher.

“Yeah, our boys never talk to each other,” an astute comment from one wayward dad.

“Well, maybe it’s because you dads are so busy yelling instructions at them,” I responded.

“Whoa, I’m moving away from your wife,” one of them commented, his smile barely concealed his ego.

“Stop stifling them, let them play their game,” I continued.

“We have to tell them what to do,” another dad informed me.

“You are not their coach!” I reminded him. “Model some positive behavior on the sidelines, please.”

The ridiculously annoying banter continued for a few minutes longer as I maintained my position as referee of the wayward fathers; trying to stymie the continuation of the parents’ toxic behavior; even as I was not able to contain the dad that kept stomping up and down the sidelines.

What is it about youth soccer matches and their propensity to bring out the worst behavior in dads, and moms? A soccer mom recently slapped a referee at a local tournament - scandalous behavior! I for one am fed up with the bad behavior. Maybe I should launch a campaign to eradicate it for the benefit of our young athletes; to foster more positive parental behavior on the sidelines.

Registration Deadlines
Players must register online before the deadline for each tryout. The deadline information can be found once you click on the applicable age group tryout registration, on the “Welcome Page”. There is a $50 Late Tryout Fee which will be added to the $30 tryout fee for a total of $80.

Check-in
Players must download and bring a completed Medical Release Form to the Tryouts and submit it at check-in. Medical Release form does NOT have to be notarized.

State and Preliminary tryouts & schedule -- Girls ’97, ’96, ’95 and Boys ’96, ’95 do not have preliminary tryouts, they need to register directly for the State Tryouts. For Boys Preliminary tryouts, please register at only one location.

Publix Atlanta Cup Saturday Update

Hi all,

We have a few last minute update for the upcoming tournament; please see below....

A few last minute reminders:

ON-LINE CHECK-IN:
All on-line check-in must be completed by Sunday, August 28 at midnight. If you do not complete the on-line check-in, a representative from your team will be required to attend check-in on Friday evening at Tournament Headquarters - the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North, between 3pm and 9 pm. Please see the Check-In Information under the DOCUMENTS tab.

TRAINERS:
All venues will have trainers on site. If a player needs medical, please look for the trainer's tent or see a field marshal for assistance.

WEATHER:
It is going to be hot. Remember to have plenty of fluids for your players. Remind coaches and fans to pay attention to the heat as well. Unless the weather breaks and you are told otherwise at the venue, we will have water breaks during all games. Water breaks are for hydration purposes only, they are quick and the clock will run.

T-SHIRTS:
Remember to pick up your pre-ordered t-shirts at check-in. If you registered on-line, your shirts will be available at your venue on Saturday afternoon for pick-up. Shirts will be available for sale at all venues. Get yours early before they are gone.

SCHEDULES and WITHDRAWALS:
We have made a few changes to the schedules. Please check the website for updates on a regular basis. We are close to filling all remaining open slots. If a team withdraws going forward it will be very difficult to get a replacement. Hopefully this will not be an issue.

SUNDAY EVENING HOTEL ROOMS:
If your team advances to Championship Monday and you want to change your hotel to be closer to your Venue, please call Connections on Sunday afternoon. They will be in the office from 2 pm to 6 pm to assist.

The Tournament Committee, Venue Personnel and Referees are ready for a great Publix Atlanta Cup. We are looking forward to some great matches over the Labor Day weekend. If you have any questions or need assistance while you are here, please ask anyone at the Venue and they'll be happy to help.

Youth Soccer Players Need High Calorie Diet

Dear Parents,

As we prepare our minds and boys for the upcoming tournament, here's an article posted online that I wanted to share with you all. Please exhale and enjoy while we dream about beating all the top players in our division :-)

It may be too early to determine what the weather will be like on day weekend of tournament, however the key thing is to keep our boys hydrated for the entire weekend as we anticipate a high 90 degree temperature.

Also, I've heard that some parents did not recieve the Atlanta Cup schedule, please reply to me when you get this article, that way I will know who recieved email and pinpoint on the ones that did not. Thanks....

At least 3,000 calories per day for peak performance

Youth soccer players need a high calorie diet for peak performance. In fact, you might say they are on a "see food" diet: they eat whenever they see food.

Soccer burns calories

Youth soccer players are calorie-burning machines. Consider that an average youth player runs anywhere from 2 to 4 miles per game, while older players and pros can cover up to 10K (6.2 miles). Over the course of a typical two-day soccer tournament, that adds up to an astounding total of 10 to 15 miles per day for the youth player.

Running alone burns 100 calories per mile (about as many calories as in a medium banana). Add in the other demands of the sport, and the calories that a child needs to consume to fuel her growing body, and it is easy to understand the enormous expenditure of energy playing soccer requires. Yet few soccer players take in the number of calories they need for optimum performance.

One British study of top 14-year-old swimmers, soccer players, and track athletes found that all three groups failed to meet the recommendations for caloric intake (at least 3,000 calories per day for active young athletes). The diets of soccer players were also deficient in vitamin D, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Not surprising, given the fact that they scored an average of 15.5 points out of a possible 56 points on a test of their nutritional IQ.

Soccer players need to think of themselves as endurance athletes, such as cyclists and long-distance runners, and eat the same kind of high-calorie diet. Like those athletes, soccer players need to have "a banana in one hand and a sandwich in the other." Basically, this means youth soccer players need to be eating all the time.

The simple fact is that most youth players just don't eat enough. For whatever reason, whether it is because they become distracted, nervous or excited, their focus is not on eating and they end up eating a diet that, while it might be okay for a sedentary person, doesn't work for a soccer player.

Referee Courses

Courses are coming up quickly. Take advantage of this opportunity for the boys to make some extra money.

This provides you with information on Referee Certification Courses. This information can be found on Georgia Soccer website under Referee Tab. http://gasoccer.com/referees/referee-certification.aspx

The Entry Course is the first class you will attend. For most, this means the Entry Course (R9). It is nine hours long, three on a weeknight (Thursday or Friday) and six hours on Saturday, four of which are on-field practice. All materials are provided. The cost is $80. The course fee does NOT include uniform or referee equipment, which will entail a cost of about $40 - $50 at a retailer. You must attend all of a nine (9) hours and pass a written 50-question test with 75% or higher. You will receive a teal Recreational Referee badge which will allow you to referee U-14 and younger recreational games and be an assistant referee on U-14 recreational and select games.

The Upgrade Course R9 to R8, often called the Bridge Class, is nine hours long with the same schedule as the Entry Class. The on-field exercise is only one hour. While the class covers all the laws, emphasis is placed on issues encountered at higher levels of play than recreational -- foul recognition and selection, recognizing and dealing with misconduct, managing the game and players -- all at the select level of youth play. The cost is $80. Requirements include scoring 75% or better on a 100-question test. Successful completion results in obtaining a referee grade 8 badge.

Sunny skies and hot temperatures are upon us, beautiful summer is here. And as our boys prepare to enjoy endless outdoor activities, as some prepare to flex their soccer muscles with tryouts coming up in the next few days, here is some timely (and timeless) advice:

U13 Boys Select TRYOUTS

99 Boys Parents and Players,

It is very important for all players to come to tryouts both to confirm your intention to return as well as to show possible newcomers the strength of our program. For planning we would appreciate it if you would reply in email asap to Coach Mike and indicate if you ARE NOT going to Tryout, or, if you ARE NOT AVAILABLE to attend Tryouts but would still like opportunity to be selected for one of the teams. We are aiming to form 3 Teams and if the Tryout numbers support it we would add a fourth team as well.

Select Tryouts are pretty simple, lace up the boots and play-ball! We often begin the first night with Small-Sided Games in order to evaluate "skill in tight spaces". We progress to 11v11 Games in order to further evaluate the players overall Technical, Tactical and Physical abilities.

Tryouts will take place on Tuesday/May 31, Wednesday/June 1 and Thursday/June 2, from 7:30-9pm for ALL U13 Boys Teams. We will email you a copy of the Tryout Registration Form so that you can complete it ahead of time and simply hand-in when you arrive at the first night of Tryouts.

End of Season Tournaments for the U12 Boys Academy

AC Milan will be participating in the Academy Cup on May 14 & 15 in the 11v11 Division.

Inter Milan and Napoli will be participating in the UFA Xtreme Tournament (Cumming, GA) on May 21 & 22. Inter will play 11v11 and Napoli will play 8v8 (the tournament does not have enough teams at 11v11 to provide appropriate competition for Napoli). Rosters will be posted soon but please let us know if you are NOT AVAILABLE on May 21 & 22 so that we can plan accordingly.

GRADUATION Party will be rescheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 17 at the end of Practice and more details to come.

Coach Bruno would like to complete his Player Evaluation Meetings on Tuesday, May 3 at the GSA Clubhouse. Bruno has completed a hand-written Player Evaluation for each player which he will bring to the Meeting. The Player Evaluation Meeting includes the Player and at least one Parent.

Coach Alfonso will be conducting his Player Evaluation Meetings next week and a schedule of times will be posted soon. Coach Alfonso also has a hand-written copy of the Player Evaluation that will be provided at the time of the Meeting with the Player/Parent.

U12 Boys "Graduation" Day and Tryouts

U12 Boys "Graduation" Day!

On Sunday, May 22. (time TBD, late afternoon) we will have 2/11v11 Scrimmage Games for all of our players to enjoy. AC and Inter will be mixed together and Parma and Napoli will be mixed together as well so that we can form equal teams and provide competitive games for all. Go GSA!

At the conclusion of the Scrimmage Games we will have "Food & Drinks" at the GSA Pavillion. We will take some time to recognize the U12 Boys Graduating Class of 2011. As well, we want to discuss the process of Tryouts.

If you have any questions about Tryouts please send them to Coach Mike so that we can be prepared to address all questions at that time.

U13 BOYS TRYOUTS

Tryouts for the U13 Boys always take place the three days following Memorial Day Weekend on Tuesday (5/31), Wednesday (6/1) and Thursday (6/2) and the times will be similar to our practice times. We will post this information on our website by the first week in May.

Please let us know asap if you WILL NOT be available for Tryouts so that we can plan accordingly.

Our goal is to form 3, U13 Boys Teams. If the pool of players at Tryouts turns out to be enough to form 4 teams than we will do just that.

For the Fall 2011 Season our plan is to request that our U13 Boys Teams be placed in the following Divisions: Red (1st) Team in Classic 1. White (2nd) Team in Classic 2. Black (3rd) Team in Classic 3. Blue (4th) Team in Classic 4. We do not have control as to where the State actually places each team but this is our tentative plan.

The club is open this afternoon for games and there is one field that is open (Bender) therefore Coach Alfonso would like to have the AC and Inter teams play the scrimmage that was scheduled for 9am this morning. We were trying to also invite Napoli & Parma out this afternoon but the coaching staff has conflicts with other scheduled games which makes it impossible to do.

We are working on rescheduling some games for a Sunday later in the season due to the number of rain-outs we've had.

Remember, Barcelona and Real Madrid play today on Gol TV and of course there are some great games on Fox Soccer Channel as well. Enjoy!

Every Season we have at least a few in-house scrimmage games and that's what we are doing for this Saturday morning at GSA. AC and Inter have been mixed to form two combined teams and the same was done with Napoli and Parma. Should be some good soccer for all of us to enjoy.

Spring Break 3v3 Challenge and Camp

Spring Break 3v3 Challenge and Camp!

Gwinnett County Schools are out on Friday, April 8th and players are invited to joint us for the GSA 3v3 Challenge. The 3v3 Tournament will run from 9:00am until 3:00pm and is open to all players age 8 through 14, both Recreational and Select. Players can form their own teams or show up as an individual and we'll find you a team. Each team may have up to 5 players on their team.

Registration begins at 8:45am and the cost is $20 per player and players should bring their lunch. To pre-register or for more information, please contact Campbell Chapman or Mike Farnham.

Spring Break Camp

April 4, 5, 6 & 7

U5-U6 and U8 / 9am -11am

The camp is designed to teach younger players the fundamentals of the game. Emphasis will be on playing games, game-like competitions and challenging skill building activities. Cost is $60 for the 4 day camp.

U9 thru U14 / 9am – Noon

The camp will focus on the following:

Dribbling: Focus on ways to maintain possession of the ball as well as learn different moves used by professionals to create space and evade defenders.

Heading: Learn the different methods to head the ball, specific to different game situations, while stressing the skills needed to improve directional heading.

Passing & Control: Improve both long- and short-range passing accuracy, and learn to play away from pressure with your first touch--giving you more time to make decisions.

Shooting: Work on striking the ball cleanly and accurately, so that you put a higher percentage of shots in the back of the net.

Agility: Improve footwork while increasing your balance and speed, thereby giving you that extra step to pass your opponent.

Cost $90 for all 4 days or $25 per day.

Jogo Bonito Wednesdays with Coach Nuno Piteira begins this coming Wednesday March 2, 2011 from 6:00pm-7:30pm on Griffith Field and runs every Wednesday until the end of April.

What is JOGO BONITO WEDNESDAYS? It's soccer skills training Portuguese Style.

Coach Nuno wants to spend and an hour and a half with the U11 and U12 Boys on skills training. He ask that the boys come with their ball and water. They don't need shin guards or cleats, turf or tennis shoe are fine. They must bring the proper attitude to learn the BEAUTIFUL GAME or JOGO BONITO.

This is an optional training session but should not be missed! It is not often The Director of Coaching/Head Coach spends this much time and effort training with the
younger boys of a club.

U12/99 Boys - Explanation of Tournament Rosters

We are participating in 3 Tournaments in order to reciprocate the support we received at the GSA Adidas Invitational in December. This will require that several players will be asked to play in two February Tournaments. We rarely have our players/teams compete in two tournaments in one month but we have no choice based on the number of teams that we have promised to send to each of the February Tournaments.

I have spent several hours laboring over the rosters and no matter what I do I know that there will be some players that are dissapointed that they are not playing in two tournaments in February. However, we will make sure that all players will participate in a minimum of 3 Tournaments for the Spring Season.

The Tournament Rosters will be posted on Friday.

If you have any questions please let me know. Hope to see everyone next week at practice...if the weather permits!

The world's three greatest players have a few things in common.

Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi all stand barely 5-foot-7 tall. They're teammates at Barcelona and they all came out of the club's youth program.

The trio finished tops in voting for the 2010 FIFA Ballon d’Or, the world player of the year award won by Messi.

2010 World Cup champs Iniesta (age 26) and Xavi (31) joined Barcelona at age 11 and 12, respectively. Messi (23) arrived from Argentina at age 13.

One person who had a close eye on all three of them during their youth days is Albert Benaiges, the coordinator of Barcelona's youth teams, which spawned seven players who played for Spain in its World Cup final win.

After the Ballon d’Or honors, Benaiges recalled his impressions of the trio in their early years.

“No one back then knew they would be world-class players,” he told Germany’s Kicker Magazine. “For sure, Messi’s great talent was already apparent. Also in Iniesta and Xavi one saw early on that they offered something special -- or else we wouldn’t have brought them in.

“But anyone who says that when he saw those three players at age 11, 12 and 13 he knew they were future superstars is a liar.”

Benaiges says that it’s at age 16 when they can predict if a boy might mature into a very good player.

“Before that age it’s nearly impossible,” he said.

Benaiges does recall that Messi was incredibly fast with the ball. That even at 11, Xavi almost never lost the ball. And that Iniesta was a sensitive, considerate boy – shy but always willing to help others.

Messi, during one year, played for teams at five different levels within the club – and never complained whether it was with the A team or C team – always giving his best.

Regarding the type of training Barcelona youth players receive:

“Technical skills we can improve up till the age of 13,” Benaiges says. “But every pro was born a soccer player. Instinct and game intelligence we can’t create. Both of those come within.”

Asked what is trained, Benaiges responded: “Only technique and tactics, not fitness, which they can catch up on later.”

Happy New Year to the 99 Boys Academy Players and Families!

We hope that all of you enjoyed the Holiday Season.

Looking back on 2010 it is safe to say that soccer provided us with a wonderful escape from a very tough year. The ability to provide kids with the opportunity to have fun playing "the beautiful game" is certainly something that none of us take for granted. We are grateful to each of you for your committment, loyalty and devotion to making GSA the great club that it is.

The 99 Boys enter their final season of Academy Soccer and we are very happy with the progress of this U12 Age Group. We have an enthusiastic, hard-working and motivated group of boys that continue to get better and better at playing soccer the "GSA Way". Technically, Tactically and Pyschologically the boys are getting better. In other words, the players are becoming more skillful, smarter in their decision-making and more spirited in their efforts to "play to win." With this continued attitude and effort the boys are sure to have another successful season of growth and development in soccer.

To help keep the momentum going the Coaching Staff will begin the process of completing the Individual Player Evaluations through the month of January. Each player will receive a Player Evaluaiton to be viewed on-line. In addition, the Coach will have a Parent/Player Meeting in order to provide feedback on the Player Evaluation. The Parent/Player Meetings will be scheduled once the Player Evaluations have been completed.

FYI: The Spring Season Practices begin Tuesday, February 1. Training will remain on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8pm on Holman and Miller Fields.

FYI: Inter Milan and Parma will participate in the Cobb FC Tournament on February 11 & 12. AC Milan and Napoli will participate in the Concorde Fire Tournament on February 26 & 27. Additional Tournaments (Teams TBD) will be AFU on May 7 & 8 and UFA on May 21 & 22.

FYI: The Academy Games have been scheduled on Saturdays starting on March 5 and ending on May 14. No games on April 9 & 10 due to Spring Break. Game Schedule will be posted on the website by the first week of February.

We will have a Parent Meeting during the first week of practice in order to discuss details for the upcoming season such as Rosters, Team Formations/Rosters, Playing Format and more.

Please make sure to Register for the Spring Season and let us know if you have any questions at all.

No matter what the New Year brings we are thankful that you choose to play at GSA and we look forward to another year together.

The sidelines were perfect pandemonium by now, with horrific testosterone-filled bellows engulfing the pitch. I had heard enough. I got out of my seat and approached the dads.

“Can you hear the way the Ohio boys are talking to each other?” I asked, feeling like a Kindergarten teacher.

“Yeah, our boys never talk to each other,” an astute comment from one wayward dad.

“Well, maybe it’s because you dads are so busy yelling instructions at them,” I responded.

“Whoa, I’m moving away from your wife,” one of them commented, his smile barely concealed his ego.

“Stop stifling them, let them play their game,” I continued.

“We have to tell them what to do,” another dad informed me.

“You are not their coach!” I reminded him. “Model some positive behavior on the sidelines, please.”

Congratulations to Jack Fitton and Anais Mayo who were selected for the Georgia State Pool of ODP '99 players.

The ODP program is a target soccer skills identification program designed to expose players to a pool of competitive statewide and regional talent; with the opportunity to engage in advanced training with regional, national and international players.

Applicants to the program go through a very selective process, including a review of individual technical skill, team concept and tactical abilities: the Total Player concept.

We are proud of the accomplishments of Jack and Anais. It is a great reflection on the GSA Academy Program and its quality of players.GSA has been able to place more kids in the Olympic Development Program than any other program.

Congratulations to the boys. Go Phoenix!

Roster Explanation: We have 3 Teams in the Tournament with AC Milan playing 11v11 and Inter Milan and Napoli playing 8v8. This means that we will have at least 4-5 subs per team which is obviously more than we normally like to have per team. However, we had to place AC in the 11v11 Division in order to draw some competition to the Tournament and once we made that decision we could only form two 8v8 teams due to the number of players that we have available. We hope that each team has a fun and competitive weekend of soccer!

Don't you just love watching "our boys" play soccer? Tournaments sure are a lot of fun and always provide us with a great way to spend a beautiful weekend.

WELL DONE to all of the players! The feedback and reports from all of the Coaches was that all four teams did very well in terms of "playing good soccer" against a lot of tough competition and we want to say THANK YOU to each player for how well they represented GSA and our "style of play".

Congratulations to Inter Milan, Champions of TYSA Cup and to AC Milan, Finalist at UFA. Both teams battled worthy oppoenents in every single game and displayed quality soccer through and through.

A Special Thanks to our Coaching Staff who did an amazing job. Due to "coaching conflicts" we had several Staff Coaches that were unavailable for the Tournament games but luckily we have a ready and able crew of Coaches amonst our Parents. THANK YOU goes to the following Dads: Ken Perrry and Wayne Fuller with Inter Milan. Kent Molter with Napoli. Doug Finlayson and Tim Verona with Parma.

A very Special Thanks to our Manager, Dan Pruehs as well as a big "sorry!". Can you imagine how much work it takes to register four teams in two different Tournaments on the same weekend...that's just Academy soccer! A Manager like Dan makes it possible for all of us to enjoy our soccer experience to the fullest. THANKS DAN!

Just want to let you know about the Coaching Staff for this weekend. Bruno, Ricardo and Nuno are all at out of town Tournaments. Therefore, we have called upon a few of the experienced Dads in our program to help cover some games.

Ken Perry (Carson's Dad) and Wayne Fuller (Zuri's Dad) will work together to cover Inter Milan on Saturday and Sunday. Kent Molter (Anderson's Dad) will coach Napoli on Saturday and I will join him on Sunday morning. I will coach AC and Parma on Saturday and Sunday.

Winter Training Program Update: The second session on Monday night is full and closed. Space still available for the first session on Monday and for the first and second sessions on Tuesdays. Sign-up now to reserve a spot before it's too late!

Parkview High School (Old) Gym reserved for the following dates: 12/14 (Tue), 1/3 (Mon), 1/10 (Mon), 1/11 (Tue), 1/17 (Mon), 1/24 (Mon). However, the gym is not available until 6:30-9:30pm which means the first session will begin at 6:30pm and the second session will begin at 8pm on these above dates. I am still working to reserve additional Indoor space for the other four dates.

Winter Indoor Training Program is available to any Player that is motivated to work on Individual Skill Development during the off-season in December and January. This is an optional training program that is available to any U9-U12 Boys Academy Player. There will be five weeks of training and each Player can choose between two packages.

1) One Day per week for a Total of Five Sessions

2) Two Days per week for a Total of Ten Sessions

Training Dates: 12/13, 12/14, 1/3, 1/4, 1/10, 1/11, 1/17, 1/18, 1/24, 1/25

Training Times: Training times are subject to change based on where we will train. First session is 5:30-7pm and second session is 7-8:30pm (unless otherwise noted as it is in the above update in Red Font)

U12 Parents and Players,

We just want to inform you as to who is coaching the teams this weekend since we have a few more conflicts.

For Saturday, Coach Pete Fitton (U10 Boys Head Coach) will be coaching AC Milan and Inter Milan. Coach Pete knows the boys pretty well since his son Jack has been in the program for a few years. Kent Molter will cover the Parma game and he has experience as a youth coach for many years prior to joining us at GSA as well I sent him a line-up for the game. Coach Ricardo will be there to cover Napoli but he will be coming from an 11am game at GSA with his U16 Boys.

For Sunday, Coach Bruno will be available to coach the 1:30 Inter game and Coach Ricardo and I will split the game at 3pm with Napoli.

We just want to give you a heads up about the Coaching situation for todays game. It is one of those (few) days that not a single one of our Staff Coaches is available for the 1pm game at Dacula. Therefore, we have asked our Manager, Dan Pruehs, to cover the game for us. I have talked to Dan and also sent him a Line-up with Substitions and notes for the game. We are confident that Dan knows the team well and we are grateful that he is able to help out.

Roster Explanation: We play at HOME against North Atlanta Soccer Association-United Quest and we have 4 games of 8v8 on Weiland Field.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be on Time which means 30 minutes prior to kick-off. We have too many players arriving late and we do not want to have to reduce the amount of playing time for the players that are late but if the problem continues we will have to establish a new "Late Rule" in which a player will sacrifice playing time if they are late for a game. Roster Explanation: We talked to all of the players last night about the formation of rosters and that there will be changes to the teams from the Pre-Season Tournaments. We also told the players that the rosters will continue to change slightly throughout the season based on our constant evaluation of the players in training and games. The point we stressed the most is that no matter which team a player is on it is important that each player has the right attitude and effort, even if disappointed by their placement.

We have four teams for this weekend against North Atlanta Soccer Association at United Quest Park. We have formed an A, B and then two equal C/D teams. Again, the rosters will change slightly based on the competition that we will face as well as the number of games that we have for the day.

ODP Tryouts Start in September

The Olympic Development Program tryouts will be in early September. This is the program that identifies the best players in the state and prepares them for regional and national tryouts. The dates of tryouts and online registration process is posted on our web site in the ODP section.

Players born in 1999 through 1994 are eligible. Players tryout in calendar year based age groups, i.e. January to December. Tryout fee is $30. Players who register after the deadlines will be charged a late fee of $50 for a total of $80.

McCurry South - Deadline for registration is Sept. 3rd
RYSA Complex - Deadline for registration is Sept. 7th
South Forsyth - Deadline for registration is Sept. 7^th

Summary of Pre-Season Tournaments

What a great start to our Fall 2010 Season and it is hard to believe that almost a month has already passed us by.

Our main objective for Pre-Season Tournaments is to be able to "watch the players play" and further evaluate their current level of ability. There were several very competitive games which brought out the best in our players and made for many thrilling moments to enjoy. WELL DONE to all of the players, coaches and parents during the Tournaments!

CONGRATULATIONS to our U12 Boys AC Milan, NASA Classic U12 Division 1 Champions. After losing their first game they rallied to win three very tough games including a magnificent 2-1 victory in the final. Napoli and Parma also represented quite well and should be proud of their performances against some very stiff competition. Overall our first set of games for the 2010 Fall Season were a great success and we hope that everyone is eager to keep it up and to "get after it" all throughout the season.

A SPECIAL THANKS to Dan Pruehs who continues to pour his heart and soul into his role as our Team Manager. Thanks for getting the boys "dressed", keeping the parents informed and pointing the coaches in the right direction. Thanks also to the Parents who volunteered to assist Dan through the many tasks of of the Tournament weekend.

Our "Regular Season Games" begin on September 11 and during the next two weeks the coaches will be discussing the formation of rosters which will be posted no later than the week of September 6. Rosters will remain "basically the same" for the season but we will consistently have the opportunity to move players between teams based on the development of the individual player, the competition and the number of games per game-date and the particular needs for each team/game.

April 5-6-7 at GSA

U5-U6 and U8

The players will learn the fundamentals of the game. Play Fun games, competitions and challenging skill building activities.

Cost $45

U9 thru U14

9am – Noon

The camp will focus on the following:

Dribbling: Focus on ways to maintain possession of the ball as well as learn different moves used by professionals to create space and evade defenders.

Heading: Learn the different methods to head the ball, specific to different game situations, while stressing the skills needed to improve directional heading.

Passing & Control: Improve both long- and short-range passing accuracy, and learn to play away from pressure with your first touch--giving you more time to make decisions.

Shooting: Work on striking the ball cleanly and accurately, so that you put a higher percentage of shots in the back of the net.

Agility: Improve footwork while increasing your balance and speed, thereby giving you that extra step to pass your opponent

Small-Sided Games: 3v3 and 4v4!

Cost $60 for three days or $25 per day.

We are working to secure a field for Saturday or Sunday in order to conduct our scrimmage games that were canceled last Saturday due to the snow storm.

Important Spring Season Information

Last week a meeting was held with Coaches and Managers in preparation for the upcoming season.

· There will be a Parent meeting coming up to inform parents of the Coaches' goals and expectations for the season.

· NO CLEAT RULE- Due to the condition of our complex, we have to do what we can to salvage our fields. Therefore, NO CLEATS are allowed during practice session. All players are encouraged to have a proper pair of TURF shoes which are ideal for training purposes. Flats and tennis shoes will hinder a player's ability to perform at their best.

· Training Kit- Please have your player wear the proper Training Kit for practice. For our teams, this is the grey training shirt (either the Camp Shirt or Newmark shirt from Sean) black shorts and white socks on Tuesdays and free choice of jerseys, black shorts, and white socks on Thursdays.

· State of the Field- It looks like it may be another challenging season for us when it comes to using our complex for training. Please be patient and understanding of this situation.

· Team Website- We are making every effort to use our Team Website as much as possible.

The coaching staff is eager to get the Spring Season started so we would like to conduct a Training Session on Thursday, February 4 from 5-6:30pm at GSA.

This is an optional training session so do not worry about changing plans if you already have something scheduled.

We will begin to post the Player Evaluations on-line this week. We want to provide a brief explanation about the "4 Point Rating Scale" so that everyone understands how we grade the players.

The Scale should be read as follows:

1 - 1.8 is a 4th/D team player 1.8 - 2.5 is a 3rd/C team player 2.5 - 3.3 is a 2nd/B team player 3.3 - 4.0 is a 1st/A team player

If you have any questions feel free to contact us prior to your schedule Player/Parent Meeting or simply talk to us at that time.

PLAYER EVALUATIONS

To inform the new players and to remind the returning players, the GSA Player Evaluation process consists of an on-line Player Evaluation completed by the Coach as well as a meeting between the Coach and the Player & Parent(s).

The on-line Player Evaluation provides a comprehensive review of the player's Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological development.

All of the Player Evaluations will be completed in January. Thank you for your patience through this process. Each coach has multiple teams and it takes a great deal of time and effort to complete all of the Player Evaluations.

GSA WINTER TRAINING PROGRAM

Coach Mike will conduct a Winter Training Program for any Boys Academy Player interested in improving their Technique in Passing, Receiving, Heading, Shooting as well as 1v1 Attacking & Defending Skills.

Training Sessions will take place from 5:30-6:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays during the month of January from 1/4/10 - 1/27/10. Sessions will be at GSA (or, if available, at an indoor facility near GSA).

Cost is $60 per player for 8 Sessions (2 days per week). Or, $30 per player for 4 Sessions (1 day per week).

GSA Academy Parents and Players,

The condition of our soccer fields are very poor. Despite the nicer weather of the past week, all you need to do is walk the complex and you will understand how wet and muddy they still remain. The club was partially open this past week and we really tore-up the fields. As well, as it seems to be the norm nowadays, more rain is due this week. Therefore, we just want to confirm what you already know since we have been "adjusting" practices for the last several weeks.

Practice Plan:

1) If Club is Open we are ready to go at the usual day and time. Website is updated at the lastest by 3pm each day (most of the time).

2) If Club is Closed but the Weather is Good we are ready to conduct the Parking Lot Training Session at the usual day and time. The staff loves these sessions because we really get to focus 90minutes on the most important area of player development - Technique and Skill!!!

3) If Club is Closed and the Weather is Bad we will work to find an indoor facility as we have done in the past and do our best to keep the extra cost to a minimum. The practice time will depend on the practice site that we use and we will do our best to keep it as close to the regularly scheduled practice times as possible.

Updates will be on the team websites as well as sent through email so please stay tuned in.

To All Academy Parents and Players,

As the leaves begin to change color we know that it is time for "Indoor Soccer" to begin. We want to take a minute to explain our policy about Indoor Soccer Leagues.

1) We encourage players to sign up and play Indoor Soccer but it is not a GSA function. It is not mandatory nor is it run by GSA. This time of the year is "break-time" for our coaches and players to take some time apart. If a GSA coach is coaching indoor soccer then it is probably because their son is on the team.

2) It is up to you (the Parent) to be proactive and to get your son on an indoor soccer team if he really wants to play. Best way to do this is to send an email to your fellow teammates and find out who is interested in putting a team together.

3) No one is allowed to use the GSA name or Uniforms for Indoor Soccer Teams.

GSA Spirit Wear

The GSA Phoenix Red 95 Boys (U15 Boys) will be doing a spirit wear fundraiser to raise funds to go with Nuno to Portugal Spring Break of 2011. They will have white GSA tee shirts available for $12, gray long sleeve tee shirts for $18 and Dry Tech Red and Black polo shirts for $35. There will be a slight upcharge for XXL sizes. There will be both adult and youth sizes in the tee shirts and just adult in the polo shirts. You will see a table set up at GSA most Saturdays and probably a couple of training nights.

Please help these boys achieve their goal of going to Portugal while showing the GSA spirit.

Things Your Kids Want You to Know!

Let the players play the game. Soccer is a player’s game and we are being trained to make decisions on the field. Don’t yell out coaching instructions during games and practices. I am trying to concentrate on what the coach says and working on what I’ve been practicing and sometimes you confuse me by your comments. Be supportive and encouraging with your words in order to bring out the best in me.

Don’t yell at me in public. It will just make things worse because I’ll be upset, embarrassed and worried that you’re going to yell at me the next time I make a mistake.

Be a Role Model in how you respect and treat the Referee (who is probably just about my age and maybe even a friend of mine). Don’t scream at or put down the officials, this embarrasses me especially when you are wrong.

Talk positively about my teammates in the same way that you would want other parents to talk about me. Don’t put down my teammates because it takes away from our team spirit and it goes against what the coach is teaching us about Team Work!

Practice good sportsmanship. As a kid, I learn by example. Win gracefully, not boastfully. Lose gracefully, not sourly. Don’t put down the other team. When you do this you’re not giving us a good example of sportsmanship so we get mixed message about being a good sport.

Don’t lose your cool. I love to see you excited about the game, but there’s no reason to get so upset that you lose your temper! It’s our game and all the attention is supposed to be on us and there is no place for derogatory, snide or sarcastic comments at kid’s games.

Avoid the PGA, the Post-Game Analysis. I do not need a lecture about what I did right and wrong. The absolutely worst time for constructive criticism is the ride home in the car after the game. Let’s chill out, savor the feeling of having played and relax, we can talk later.

Laugh and have fun. Sometimes it’s hard for me to relax and have fun during the game when I look over and see you so tense, worried or upset. Sports are about having fun and since I take my behavioral cues from you, at least try to look like you’re having fun.
